San Mateo County Fair - Visit our booth

From June 5-14, you can visit our educational booth about the District at the San Mateo County Fair. Visit the Expo building to learn about District history, see some really neat old maps, and learn more about mosquitoes, ticks, and other vectors.
Open House - Coming up!
Visit us at our Open House, which will be held Saturday, June 27th from 12-4pm. Our staff will be on-hand to answer questions, display our equipment and insect collection, and offer a variety of hands-on activities for families to enjoy learning about mosquitoes and other vectors. There will be popsicles, face painting, and Beetle Lady's Pop-Up Bug Museum on-site!
Learn more and sign up for updates on our Open House webpage.

National Mosquito Control Awareness Week - June 21-27
Our Open House is scheduled to help us wrap up National Mosquito Control Awareness Week, which is June 21-27 this year. This week is meant to recognize the important work our District, many other districts, and a variety of agencies and research institutions do on a daily basis to help protect public health.
Several cities and towns plan to recognize National Mosquito Control Awareness Week with proclamations and presentations by our District staff. We thank the following jurisdictions and their appointees to our Board of Trustees for allowing us to visit their city councils already this month: Hillsborough (Trustee Dr. Scott Smith), Millbrae (Trustee Muhammad Baluom), and San Bruno (Trustee Robert Riechel).
Common Culprit of the Month - Cockroaches

We frequently receive requests to identify insects (did you know that's one of the services we offer?). Over the next few months, we'll highlight some of the more frequent requests. This month, we're highlighting cockroaches (sorry for any heebie-jeebies!).
There are several kinds of cockroaches found in the Bay Area. Some are much more likely to be encountered in homes and other buildings, while others live outdoors. Knowing the kind of cockroach you are finding is important, because different kinds of cockroaches have different habitat preferences.
If you have cockroaches, our staff can identify the type of cockroach, share information about the kinds of environments that kind of cockroach lives in, and give advice on how to control the cockroach population.
A great way to collect a cockroach for our staff to identify is by using a sticky trap. Contact us for more information about how, where, and when to set sticky traps.
