Truck-mounted mosquito control treatment scheduled for early morning of Sunday, October 18 in parts of Redwood City and North Fair Oaks

Burlingame, CA (October 15, 2026) – To protect public health and help prevent the further spread of invasive mosquitoes, San Mateo County Mosquito and Vector Control District will conduct a truck-mounted mosquito control treatment in portions of Redwood City and North Fair Oaks where invasive Aedes aegypti mosquitoes have been found. During the past several weeks, District staff have worked intensively in the affected areas to identify and remove standing water where mosquitoes can breed and to track detections of larvae and adult mosquitoes.

The treatment will take place between 4:30 and 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 18, weather permitting. Truck-mounted equipment will release a fine mist of microscopic droplets containing DeltaGard®, a pesticide registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for mosquito control and applied according to label directions.

“Since early September, our staff have found invasive Aedes aegypti mosquitoes on multiple properties in North Fair Oaks and now in the Redwood Oaks neighborhood of Redwood City,” stated Angie Nakano, Laboratory Director.

The treatment area will include portions of North Fair Oaks and the Redwood Oaks neighborhood of Redwood City. A map of the specific treatment areas and further information can be found on the District website at www.smcmvcd.org/adult-mosquito-control-updates. Residents with additional questions can call the District at 650-344-8592.

The District will collect mosquitoes in the treatment areas before and after the application to evaluate its effectiveness. It is not necessary to stay inside or close doors and windows during the treatment. When applied as an ultra-low volume spray, the droplets remain in the air no longer than 30 minutes. Residents with outdoor fishponds or bee hives should cover them during the treatment.

“Our District staff have visited over 1,000 properties in the area over the past several weeks,” said District Manager Brian Weber. “We appreciate how helpful the community has been to our efforts to check every property in the area. Unfortunately, we have found these mosquitoes on multiple properties across a wider area than anticipated. Controlling the adult mosquitoes in the area will help slow – and hopefully prevent – the further spread of these mosquitoes.”

In addition to the scheduled neighborhood treatment targeting adult mosquitoes, the District will continue controlling mosquitoes in their immature stages through its integrated pest management program. District vector control technicians routinely inspect standing water where mosquitoes develop and treat mosquito breeding sources throughout the County.
