Justin's answers to a few questions about working with the District:
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of the job is being able to be outside all day and not be stuck in an office.
What is something you’ve learned on the job?
Something that I’ve learned on the job are the differences among yellowjackets, wasps, and bees. I definitely did not know the differences among any of those before I started this job. Anything that is fuzzy is generally not harmful to you - yellowjackets have more of a sleek, smooth body.
What is something you wish more people knew about mosquitoes?
One thing I wish people knew is how little water mosquitoes can breed in. Even just plant saucers that have a little bit of water in them can still have mosquito larvae.
What is the most common overlooked type of standing water you see at homes?
Plant saucers are definitely overlooked! Flower pots that don’t drain. Little small buckets around the yard. In the summertime when it’s hot, lots of kiddie toys that stay filled with water.
What is your favorite mosquito fact?
My favorite mosquito fact is that mosquitoes are attracted to the air that we breathe out. It seems like a lot of people are surprised by that when I tell them.
Where is the most surprising place you’ve found mosquito larvae?
I’d say in a water meter box. Sometimes the water meters boxes in the ground in front of someone’s house can hold water, and people never really think to look in there.
What is your favorite spot in San Mateo County?
Gray Whale Cove, on the coast. It’s a very small, quiet spot where not many people go. The parking is limited. It’s definitely busy on the weekends.
