Human rabies infections in the United States are exceptionally rare. However, in January a Florida 6-year-old died of the virus after exposure to a sick bat. According to news stories, his family was not aware of the risk of rabies.
If you suspect you have been exposed to rabies, or if you have had any contact with a bat, seek medical attention immediately. Prompt treatment after rabies exposure is safe, readily available, and extremely effective. Unfortunately, once symptoms develop it is too late. Untreated rabies is almost 100% fatal.
